Stellar Velocity Dispersion of the Leo a Dwarf Galaxy
نویسندگان
چکیده
We measure the first stellar velocity dispersion of the Leo A dwarf galaxy, σ = 9.3 ± 1.3 km s. We derive the velocity dispersion from the radial velocities of ten young B supergiants and two Hii regions in the central region of Leo A. We estimate a projected mass of 8 ± 2.7 × 10 M⊙ within a radius of 2, and a mass to light ratio of at least 20± 6 M⊙/L⊙. These results imply Leo A is at least ∼80% dark matter by mass. The effect of variation of stellar dispersion velocities by the galactic latitude in interpreting gravitational microlensing observations
Our galaxy is a spiral galaxy and its stars are mostly in a thin disk and rotate around the galactic center. The vertical component of the dispersion velocity of stars is a function of the galactic latitude and decreases with increasing it. In the galactic Besancon model, this dependence is ignored and they just consider the dependence of dispersion velocity on the stellar age. Becanson model i...
متن کاملThe dynamics of isolated Local Group galaxies
We measured velocities of 862 individual red giant stars in seven isolated dwarf galaxies in the Local Group: NGC 6822, IC 1613, VV 124 (UGC 4879), the Pegasus dwarf irregular galaxy (DDO 216), Leo A, Cetus and Aquarius (DDO 210). We also computed velocity dispersions, taking into account the measurement uncertainties on individual stars. None of the isolated galaxies is denser than the densest...
متن کاملThe Velocity Dispersion Profile of the Remote Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy Leo I : A Tidal Hit and Run ?
We present new kinematic results for a sample of 387 stars located in and around the Milky Way satellite dwarf spheroidal galaxy Leo I. These spectra were obtained with the Hectochelle multi-object echelle spectrograph on the MMT, and cover the MgI/Mgb lines at about 5200Å. Based on 297 repeat measurements of 108 stars, we estimate the mean velocity error (1σ) of our sample to be 2.4 km/s, with...
متن کاملPulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I
We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...
متن کاملv 2 2 9 Ju l 1 99 8 The Internal Kinematics of the Leo I Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy : Dark Matter at the Fringe of the Milky Way ∗
We present radial velocities of 33 red giants in the Leo I dSph galaxy obtained from spectra taken with the HIRES echelle spectrograph on the Keck I telescope. These data have a mean precision of 2.2 km s and lead to estimates of the central velocity dispersion and systemic velocity of Leo I of 8.8 ± 1.3 km s, and 287.0± 1.9 km s, respectively. The systemic velocity confirms past results that L...
